The biggest drawback of mutual funds is that many have high management fees—called a management expense ratio, or MER—for actively managed funds. Canada has some of the highest fund fees in the world.

Actively managed funds

These funds have a mutual fund manager choosing stocks, bonds, and other securities (depending on the type of mutual fund) on the fund’s behalf. They’re using their research and discretion as to what to buy, sell, or hold. This service comes at a cost, and it’s argued that a mutual manager can rarely beat what the market does itself, especially after fees. And even if they can beat the market one year, they may not do so the next year. It can be really tough to consistently beat the market (after fees) over a long period of time.
